When I was young my father thought me many things, I am not talking about ordinary stuff like reading, writing or even mathematics… I am talking about important lessons for life. One such lesson was on the race called life.
The idea behind this lesson was to motivate me toward success. Life, my father used to say, is like a race with many competitors, and when he said many he referred to all of the people in my surroundings (or as for back then- all the other kids). The great thing, he continued, is that no one knows about this race; only you and few others. So its like all of you kids, standing on the start line of the race of your life, but only you are waiting for the mark, the rest will keep standing and waste precious time and by the time they will realize they need to start moving you will be long gone; and that’s a great head start to have in the most important race you will ever have.
It was really nice looking at life like this and in the good times I could really see how I am passing by most of my friends. It began in high school with a bunch of friends I used to have that left somewhere behind, continued during my service in the army and I even saw it while studying at the university at in my current organization I am working for.
The “race principle” as I call it, is based on the understanding that you always have to move forward, always need to motivate yourself, to improve and develop your skills & knowledge and most important- you must never compare yourself to the ones that didn’t start the race and still standing on the start line (or just passed it) even if they are your friends.
This point of view allowed me to be better prepared for every step I took till now; I had better chances to get good position in the army, this fact helped me in getting into university and complete my B.Sc in relatively young age, these two had a major contribution to my application process for the great company I am working for, and all of those helped me to get into the leading faculty in the best university and work toward my masters which I am going to complete sometime next year.
I want to believe that all of the above made me the man I am today, and that due to the characteristics I have developed I even found the wonderful young woman I am currently moving in with.
This is “the race called life” lesson in a nutshell; I hope that it will be useful for you as it was for me and that you enjoyed reading about it.
